How to Become an Educated Diamond Buyer
The most diamond for your money
Buying

The first thing you must learn is the 4 Cs of diamonds: Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat weight. These are the most important factors that influence the price of the diamond. Therefore, the company certifying the diamond is crucial to your purchase.

Jewelery stores usually buy all their diamonds loose, not having been set in a ring or jewelry piece. This allows for a clear exploration of the gem by the naked eye and a microscope or loop.

Now that you understand the nature of the 4 'Cs' you should determine which are the most important to you. Different jewelers may stress different factors that are the most important to them. This is often done with an eye on there own inventory. You must determine for yourself what is important for you.

Notice how the emphasis of the 4 'Cs' may differ from jeweler to jeweler. By this time you will have formed an opinion as to which factors are the most important to you. Most people prefer at least an I color or better, SI-2 clarity or better, and a gem that is brilliant because of the cut. Price will be determined by all these factors and by carat weight. As you shop and learn, be patient. You will gradually form an opinion and be drawn to a particular focus on one or two of the 4 'Cs'.

If you decide you want a full carat diamond (only 1% of the women in the world will ever wear a diamond with one carat or more), then a major factor in the price will have been decided on carat weight. You will have to adjust the other three 'Cs' to meet your pocket book.
